Going Beyond Average: Rethinking Gifted Services in Advanced Academics

Regardless of school size and resources, advanced and gifted students can and should thrive. The trick lies in the design of program. Too many advanced, dual credit, honors, G/T, pre-AP, AP, and ACT/SAT prep classes are designed to fit the average student and focus on students' weaknesses. In this session, we will examine why academic environments designed on the average hinder student potential where a students’ talents become a liability leading them to become bored and underchallenged.

Supporting our students with ADHD / Executive function impairment
Meet "DAVE," Dopamine Attention Variability Executive-dysfunction. Whether 504 is your love language and you see e-Sped in your sleep, you’re a veteran accommodator, new to the realm of neurodivergence, or even an ADHD-denier (*gasp*), there is something in this session for you. Like so many other labels out there, there is so much misinformation floating around and plenty of misunderstandings to clear up. With 1 in 11 students diagnosed with ADHD, we are all touched by these unique individuals who on any given day can leave us drained of all patience, cracking up hysterically, or scratching our heads in bewilderment.

This session is about debunking ADHD untruths and understanding what this neurodivergence is really about, along with many of the ways it potentially impacts our students (hint: it's not actually about attention or hyperactivity!). We will learn how to recognize traits, guide kids through the struggles, highlight the strengths, and support our students as they figure themselves out.

Self Regulation using a Safe Place
Many classroom behaviors arise because students do not know how to self regulate. The Safe Place is a self regulation center used in classrooms all over the world. Many classrooms have a "calm corner" but do students know what to do when they get there? Do you find them using it for the wrong reasons like work avoidance? The Safe Place gives structure to your "calm corner" and teaches kids the research based steps to self regulation. Once students know the steps, they can use The Safe Place independently for self regulation. The Safe Place is not a one sized fits all either! It can be tailored to each classroom and setting. It is not just for Elementary! There are Safe Places in middle and high schools as well. Schools can even have a staff Safe Place! This session will teach about the steps to self regulation, how to teach those to students, and how to set up a Safe Place in your setting.  You will be provided with visuals and take aways to get started!

Becoming All You Will Ever Need: How to Break Free from the Egoic Mind and Return to Yourself
"Until You Make the Unconscious Conscious, it Will Direct Your Life and You Will Call it Fate"--Carl Jung

This session is designed to help attendees understand how unconscious forces, as well as overt ones, shape us into rote responders to our environment that is largely based on our conditioning and often entirely without awareness. This training will focus on providing life-changing concepts to move attendees into the present moment; thereby increasing awareness, focus and emotional management. Through an increased understanding of self-acceptance and self-love, those attending will be more able to reclaim their true self previously held hostage by their egoic mind. Come and join Marc as he explores topics including: expectation management, acceptance vs judgement, attachments, "the watcher" and the ego itself.  This session is for all of those who are interested in and curious about self-exploration, personal growth and becoming all we were intended to be.

Meaningful Morning Meetings
Morning meeting helps us establish our campus and classroom culture. We will go through a 4-part morning meeting model and the reasons behind each part. By implementing these strategies, your morning meetings can become a valuable platform for fostering connection, maintaining routine, and meeting expectations while keeping your students engaged and motivated.

You will have time to create your own morning meeting templates to begin building a strong classroom culture from Day 1.

Bossy Pants, Perfectionists, and Slackers, Oh My!
As a classroom teacher, you know that it is not only a challenge to meet students' academic needs, but also their unique social and emotional needs. Learn strategies to deal with some of these issues and how to help kids develop appropriate mindsets and coping strategies in a positive way. As a gifted coordinator and teacher for 25 years, Shannon has helped create programming and lessons for the social and emotional growth of gifted students. She will share ideas for helping our students who need to hone their leadership skills, provide tips for giving perfectionists a proper perspective, help you develop confidence in your shy students, and give teachers tools to motivate their unmotivated students.
